Kilby and Holden Lead Spartans Over Roadrunners

San Jose, Calif. - Diver Amy Kilby qualified for the 2011 NCAA Zone Diving Championship and Jessica Holden set a new school record on the 3-meter board as the San Jose State Spartans women's swimming and diving team defeated the Roadrunners of Cal State Bakersfield 173-105 on Friday at The Aquatics Center on the San Jose State campus.

The win improves the Spartans dual-meet record to 7-1 on the season, while Cal State Bakersfield drops to 3-11 overall.

"I was hurt at the beginning of the year and a bit nervous that I might not qualify," Kilby said.  "It's a relief to know that I made it.  Both Jessica (Holden) and I dove really well today and that gives us confidence going into the WAC Championship."

Kilby scored career bests 266.17 and 281.10 on the one and 3-meter boards, respectively, to secure her spot at the Zone E Championship on March 11-13 in Minneapolis, Minn.

Holden's total of 292.27 on the 3-meter board eclipsed her previous school record of 290.70, which she set in earlier this season.  Kilby's 281.10 points bettered her career high of 222.90 which she established at the Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Ariz., last November.

"Having both Amy and Jessica going to the Zone Championship will be a great experience for them and for us as a program," diving coach Mark Butcher said.  "They will be competing against the top divers in the country and that is where we want to be."

The Spartan swimmers won 11 of 14 events and had the fastest times in each race.

SJSU was led by multi-race winners Darcie Anderson (200 medley relay, 100 and 200 breaststroke), Julia Craddock (200 medley relay, 200 fly), Rudie Guerrero (100 and 200 back) and Julia Koch (200 and 500 free).

"We are really please with the team's performance," head coach Sage Hopkins said.  "Today marks the end of our heavy training as we move toward the WAC Championship.  Today we wanted to have a physically strong and mentally tough effort by the team.  Everyone did a good job and rose to the occasion.  Julia (Craddock) and Ashlyn (Acosta) had personal bests in the 200 fly and as a team we swam very well in all the events."

The Spartans return to the pool next Saturday, February 5, to wrap up the regular season against WAC-rival Fresno State.  The meet begins at 12 p.m. at The Aquatics Center and will be preceded by Senior Day ceremonies.
