San Jose, Calif. - Spartan swimmers Amanda Carr, Nikki Chapman, Jillene Golez, Brie Marhenke and Sara Riley made their final appearances at The Aquatics Center on Senior Day and helped San Jose State University to its fourth straight dual meet victory, 119-98, at The Aquatics Center on Saturday, January 26.
San Jose State closes the season with a dual meet record of 8-4. The Spartans won 13 of the 14 events during the afternoon, with a combined seven individual triumphs coming from seniors, alongside a meet-opening win by the four seniors in action in the 200 medley relay.
Chapman, a team co-captain who has battled an ailing back throughout her college days, including serious back surgery in June of 2006, earned the first individual and relay wins of her college career in her last home meet. Riley, who had produced her first collegiate relay win earlier in the month in a dual meet at Cal State Bakersfield, also won her first individual events.
With head coach Sage Hopkins designating his active seniors as the A’ foursome for the 200 medley relay to begin the swimming portion of the day’s festivities, Chapman led off with 50 yards of backstroke before giving way to Riley for breaststroke, Golez for butterfly, and Carr’s anchor freestyle leg. The seniors timed 1:59.30 to take the first-place points. With the 2008 Western Athletic Conference Championship looming in less than a month and nursing a slight injury, Marhenke was held out of Saturday’s action.
Chapman’s individual win came in the 200 backstroke in 2:21.93.
Carr, Golez and Riley were each double winners, with Carr and Golez sweeping their specialties, the distance freestyle and butterfly events, respectively. Carr raced to top honors in the 1000 in 10:39.62 following the medley relay, and later in the 500 free in 5:16.66. Golez, with what sounded like over a 100-person personal contingent cheering her on among a strong gathering of friends, family, fans, students and San Jose State athletics department staff members present, won the 100 fly (59.91) and 200 fly (2:09.90).
Riley took the 100 backstroke in 1:05.23 and the 50 free in 26.41.
Other Spartan winners on the day included freshmen Julia Koch (200 free, 1:57.57), Caitlin Macky (100 breast, 1:06.72), Meghan McCurley (100 free, 53.89) and Kirsten Trammell (200 breast, 2:26.54), as well as Erin Garcia in the 200 individual medley (2:11.93). Macky’s time was just .64 seconds off her season best, while McCurley’s win marked her third straight dual success in the 100 freestyle. Garcia’s mark was a major college best for the sophomore transfer by more than seven seconds in her only event of the afternoon.
With San Jose State swimming all three of its teams as exhibitions, like it did regularly throughout the afternoon, Cal State East Bay took first place in the 400 freestyle relay to close the meet, in 4:12.58. The top Spartan relay of Lauren Mar, Ashley Krisman, Ashley Ladd and Koch as the anchor, timed 3:42.36.
Kelly Wilkings, a junior transfer from Saddleback College who joined the team during the break for the spring semester, made her Spartan debut, timing 2:03.26 in the 200 free and 57.52 in the 100 free.
Mar, a junior, continued her strong late-season surge, sprinting 24.25 in the 50 free, just .03 seconds off her season best.
Hannah Tringham swam her first 100 backstroke (1:03.26) of the year, while Beste Erener swam the two breaststroke events for the first time this season, timing 1:11.46 in the 100 and 2:30.32 in the 200. Macky’s 100 fly (58.39), McCurley’s 200 IM (2:18.98) and Trammell’s 50 free (27.10) were the first of their college careers.
Prior to the meet, Carr, Chapman, Golez, Marhenke and Riley were recognized for their tremendous overall contributions to the Spartan women’s swimming and diving program, through their community involvement, leadership and athletic and academic performance. Carr, Chapman and Golez are fourth-year seniors, with Marhenke and Riley currently in their third seasons at San Jose State. All five played key roles toward posting back-to-back best-ever fourth-place WAC finishes the last two years.
“I was very pleased with our performances today,” remarked Hopkins. “With it being our last dual meet going into the WAC Championship, our focus was on swimming the races strategically, in terms of how we will want to race them at the WAC meet. This was a great tune-up meet going into our last competition.”
“I want to single out the performances of our seniors in particular,” went on Hopkins about his senior class. “All of them have been amazing contributors to the program, and have given back in countless ways, such as community service, academic performance, and leadership both in the pool and in the classroom, in addition to their athletic accomplishments. I was happy to see several of them end up with first-place swims today.”
San Jose State now has 23 days of preparation left before departing for San Antonio, Texas, on Monday, February 18, for the WAC Championship. The four-day meet begin on the Wednesday night, February 20, at the Palo Alto College Natatorium. The Spartans will look for a program-first top-three placement at this year’s event.
