Heather Denman Named WAC Swimmer Of The Week

Denver, Colo. - San Jose State University's Heather Denman has been named the Verizon Wireless Western Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Week for the week of January 11-17.

Denman, the 2009 WAC Freshman of the Year and a native of Brookeville, Md. (Sherwood HS), turned in the top times in all three of her individual events, and also swam the lead-off 50-yard backstroke leg of the first-place 200 medley relay to propel San Jose State (8-3) to the comfortable sweep of a double-dual meet at home on Senior Day over area rivals UC Davis (195-103) and Pacific (208-71) of the Big West Conference on Sunday, January 17.

Under rainy conditions all afternoon, Denman first went 26.12 to aid the Spartan 'A' foursome to the relay victory in 1:45.90, their second-fastest this season and eighth-fastest all-time. She then sped 55.23 to touch first in the 100 back, achieving her fourth NCAA consideration qualifier of the season, her third in the event. Denman saved her best for the 200 back, swimming two minutes flat (2:00.00) to easily out-distance runner-up and sophomore teammate Kirstin Yamaguchi by over 10 full seconds. The mark fell just .42 seconds short of her then-school-record, gold-medal-winning effort at the 2009 WAC Championship (1:59.58).

Finally, Denman won the 100 fly in 55.75. She already held school records and the top marks this season in the WAC in all three events heading into the day. For the afternoon, Denman tallied a maximum 27 individual points against both UC Davis and Pacific, and aided in the 11 relay points against each foe, for a grand total of 76. The victories were the third straight for San Jose State against both UC Davis and Pacific, and a fourth consecutive triumph for the Spartans to open the 2010 calendar year.

Denman is now a two-time WAC Swimmer of the Week this season, having garnered that distinction after the Toshiba Classic on November 25, and a six-time honoree for her career. This is the third weekly award for a Spartan in 2009-10. Freshman Amy Kilby was tabbed the WAC Diver of the Week on January 6, and was a candidate for the award again this week.

The WAC Diver of the Week recognition went to Hannah Bocksnick of Hawai'i.

The Spartans next head to Stockton, Calif., this Saturday, January 23, for another dual meet against the University of the Pacific at Chris Kjeldsen Pool.
