Swimming Downs Cal State East Bay; Now 13-1

Hayward, Calif. - San Jose State University won 10 out of 11 events to top host Cal State East Bay, 119-61, in a non-conference women’s swimming dual meet on Friday, January 16.

With its 13th consecutive victory, San Jose State’s dual meet record now stands at 13-1, the best in known program history. Cal State East Bay, which competes at the NAIA level in women’s swimming, and is part of the Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference, drops to 1-3.

Fourth-year Spartan head coach Sage Hopkins put a majority of his 19 active swimmers in different events and competing in different strokes throughout the shortened meet with an 11-event format, in San Jose State’s first trip to CSUEB’s Pioneer Pool.

Tri-captain Kirsten Trammell won both the 200 freestyle (1:59.79) in her first appearance in the event of her sophomore campaign, and the 100 butterfly (1:00.04), with the latter mark a lifetime best and over nine seconds faster than her previous best this season.

Heather Denman tried her hand at the distance freestyle events and placed first in both her initial collegiate attempts in the 1000 (10:55.95) and 500 (5:22.39). She won at the grueling longer distance over sophomore Rudie Guerrero (11:11.43), also in her first such race as a Spartan. Amy Friedhoff, like Denman a true freshman, took the 100 free in a season-best 55.16.

Lauren Mar (2:13.26), Meghan McCurley (1:02.51) and Daphne Yeung (1:12.06) won the 200 individual medley, 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke, respectively. It was Mar’s first collegiate IM race and Yeung’s first collegiate breaststroke activity.

The meet began with a Spartan victory in the 200 medley relay. San Jose State went 1-2-3 in the event, led by the first-place foursome of Erin Garcia, Beste Erener, Linzy Warkentin and Caitlin Macky in 1:57.00.

In the 200 freestyle relay to cap the afternoon, Denman, Julie Wynn, Guerrero and Megan Mills timed 1:43.50 for the top spot, narrowly over the Spartans’ B’ foursome of Mar, Friedhoff, Koch and Katey Nelson in 1:43.69. The latter group had an early lead with Mar over Denman.

The Spartans had a trio of 1-2-3 finishes in individual events. The closest race was arguably the 100 fly, a race in which Trammell was followed closely within half a second by teammates Hannah Tringham (1:00.18) and Kristin Yamaguchi (1:00.53).

The only Pioneer event win on the day was turned in by Jill Lothian in the 50 free (25.69). She edged Julia Koch (collegiate-best 25.98) and Friedhoff (26.42) for the Spartans, with Friedhoff in her first 50 freestyle activity collegiately. Warkentin (26.66) and Guerrero (26.77) also participated in the event, Guerrero swimming 50 yards of butterfly.

In other races, Julia Koch (57.15) and Nelson (58.24) had the second- and fourth-fastest times in the 100 free, with Nelson in the first 100 freestyle race of her four-year career. In her first career 200 free, Erener was third-fastest in 2:04.36 behind Trammell and Wynn (2:01.00). Ashley Krisman (2:19.43) and Mills (2:24.73) went 2-3 behind Mar in their first 200 IM races. Tri-captain Ashley Ladd went 1:03.81 in a 1-2-3-4 SJSU effort in her first college 100 fly. Finally, Yeung (1:06.96) and Wynn (1:07.85) swam 100 back and McCurley (1:15.15) went 100 yards of breaststroke for the first time.

Having concluded the road portion of their 2008-09 regular season, the Spartans will now have three straight Saturdays of dual meets at home inside The Aquatics Center on campus. San Jose State first hosts Cal State Bakersfield next Saturday, January 24, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
