Hopkins Earns 50th Win In Defeat Of Cal State East Bay

Hayward, Calif. - In his 73rd dual meet as head coach of the San Jose State women's Swimming and Diving team, Sage Hopkins earned his 50th career win in the Spartans defeat of Cal State East Bay on Friday in Hayward, Calif.

Hopkins becomes the first head coach in SJSU history to reach the 50 win plateau and his .685 winning percentage in dual meets is by far the programs best.  His overall dual meet record is now 50-22-1.  It is believed that no other SJSU coach has as many as 20 dual meet victories.
For the second consecutive dual meet, the Spartans won 10 individual races and recorded the fastest time in all 13 events on the day. San Jose State's multiple race winners were Rudie Guerrero with three and Ashlyn Acosta with two.
Guerrero took the 50 back (27.89) and 50 fly (26.92), as well as, the 200 medley relay (1:53.12), where she teamed with Briana Swinney, Karly Brown and Marisa DeWames.  In addition, Guerrero swam the 200 free relay (1:39.82) as an exhibition with Kiley Foster, Swinney and Amy Friedhoff and recorded in the fastest time.
Acosta won the 100 fly (58.24) and 100 breast (1:08.70).  This was Acosta's first 100 breaststroke race of the season.
The Spartans established 16 season-best times in Hayward.  Of those, 13 came in races that the athlete had not competed in so far this season.  Four of those times were fast enough to win races.
Julia Craddock, the reigning WAC Swimmer of the Week, won the 200 free (1:54.35), Karly Brown won the 50 breast (32.51) and Guerrero the 50 fly joining Acosta as race winners the first time they competed at the distance.
"I was pleased with the team effort," head coach Sage Hopkins said.  "We asked the ladies to work on some things and do some things this week and we're very happy with the results."
San Jose State will take next week off from competition.  Then on Friday, January 28, SJSU returns to action as it welcomes Cal State Bakersfield to The Aquatics Center for the first of two dual meets to wrap up the regular season.  The first race is scheduled for 1 p.m.
