Welage averaged a team-high 16.4 points and 4.1 rebounds in seven December games. The junior from Greensburg, Ind., led the team in scoring six times during the month including his 21-point performance in the win over Santa Clara. He was ranked inside the Mountain West’s top-five in scoring during the entire month. Part of his scoring success came from the free throw line where he made 88.5 percent (23-26) of his attempts. Scoring 115 points during the month brought him even closer to hitting the 1,000-point mark for his career which he is expected to accomplish in early 2018.
Humel, a repeat winner from just a month ago, was victorious in a big meet against #3-California during December. She won the 150 backstroke and in the process defeated two Cal swimmers ranked in the top-200 nationally in the event. She wasn’t done there as she pulled off two more wins in the 11 and 200 backstroke in SJSU’s 155.00-143.00 dual meet win at CSU Bakersfield. She extended her winning streak in the backstroke to 10 in a row.
