Swimming Wins Eight Events, Beats CSU Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The San Jose State women’s swimming team showed no signs of rust Friday after a 48-day layoff, winning eight events on its way to a 119-87 dual meet win at CSU Bakersfield.
“We had a solid start to the championship segment of our season,” said San Jose State head coach Sage Hopkins, a 1997 CSU Bakersfield alumnus. “We definitely highlighted a number of areas we needed to focus on.”
The Spartans (4-1, 1-0 WAC) won seven individual events with seven different athletes and also took first in the 200 medley relay. The team had not competed since Nov. 17-19, 2011, at the Arena Invitational.
Freshman Haley Smith got her first career dual meet win Friday, taking the 200 backstroke in 2 minutes, 11.38 seconds after swimming a leg on the Spartans’ winning 200 medley relay team, which finished first in 1:51.99. Kiley Foster also won an individual event (100 freestyle, 53.42) after being a part of that winning relay squad.
Meghan McCurley lowered her season-best in the 200 freestyle by nearly eight seconds, winning Friday’s race in 1:56.21. Amy Friedhoff (1,000 freestyle; 10:37.93), Erika Harvey (50 freestyle, 24.60), Julia Craddock (400 individual medley, 4:31.60) and Heather Denman (200 butterfly, 2:07.92) also won events Friday for San Jose State.
The dual meet win is the Spartans' 10th straight over CSU Bakersfield (1-4) since 2006-07, giving them a perfect 10-0 record against the Roadrunners in that time. San Jose State is now 8-0 at CSU Bakersfield's Hillman Aquatics Center during the stretch. The Spartans have now won four straight dual meets this season.
The Spartans are right back in the pool Saturday in San Diego at the University of San Diego Relay Meet. The team finished second at the meet last season and will face seven other teams in the 10-race event.
