Spartans Head South This Weekend

San Jose, Calif. - After more than 45 days since their last competition, the San Jose State swimming and diving team travel to Cal State Bakersfield and the University of San Diego to compete in dual and relay meets this weekend.

On Saturday the Spartans face the Roadrunners of Cal State Bakersfield in a dual meet at the Hillman Aquatics Center in Bakersfield, Calif. The first race is scheduled for 11 a.m.

"We are looking at the meet as a point where we begin to focus on the final 6-8 weeks of the season," head coach Sage Hopkins said.  "We'll judge where we are and make any adjustments we need to leading up to the WAC Championships."

At noon on Sunday SJSU will take part in the USD Relay Meet with WAC-rival Boise State and the Toreros at the USD Sports Center Pool on the USD Campus.

"The relay meet will be a combination of fun and a chance to work on mental toughness," Hopkins said.  "There are 11 events over a two-hour period.  The majority of our team will swim all the events.  In a number of cases, athletes will finish a race and literally step right back on the blocks to start their next event.

"From start to finish, we are looking to be as tough and strong as we can and not focus as much on winning the overall meet," Hopkins added.  "Later in the year, particularly in the WAC Championship, we will have situations where our athletes will have to race all out and then in 15 or 20 minutes get back on the blocks for their next race and swim even faster.  The way (the) USD (meet) is set up will give us a chance to be successful in those quick turnaround situations.  Then, when we encounter them again we will have confidence that we can do it and be successful."
