Denver, Colo. - San Jose State University’s Lauren Mar and Jo Thibodaux have been named the Western Athletic Conference Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, for the week of December 29-January 4.
The selections mark the second of Mar’s career and her first this season, while Thibodaux is now a three-time honoree in her sophomore year. This is also the second time that San Jose State has swept the two awards. The Spartans have now been recognized with weekly distinction by the conference eight times this year, by far a program high.
San Jose State defeated host Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday, January 3, to improve to 10-1 on the dual season, before narrowly getting edged for first-place by Nebraska at the UC Irvine/Ayres Hotels Relay Invitational the following day.
Mar, one of four fourth-year seniors on this year’s roster, was the Spartans’ top performer over the weekend.
In the 166.5-109.5 victory at CSUB that extended the Spartans’ win streak to 10 straight meets since a season-opening loss at No. 2 Stanford, Mar was first in her only individual event of the day, sprinting 24.72 in the 50 free. She also led off the first-place A’ 400 freestyle relay to conclude the meet, with that foursome timing 3:38.76.
Mar then participated in six of 10 events at the UCI/Ayres Invitational in Irvine, Calif., as the defending champion Spartans tallied 400 points to place second behind the Huskers (423). The San Francisco native swam the second leg of the winning 3x100 backstroke relay. She also had the leadoff backstroke legs of the 200 and 400 medley relays, the second leg of the 4x50 freestyle relay, and the leadoff 100-yard freestyle legs of the 800 free (100-200-500) and 4x100 free relays. All were A’ foursomes for the Spartans, with the exception of the B’ 200 medley relay to start the day.
Thibodaux out-performed freshman teammate Jessica Holden in the two road competitions over the weekend. In the dual meet in Bakersfield, she placed second on both the one-meter and three-meter springboads with scores of 245.33 and 246.38 points, respectively, to aid in the Spartan victory.
At the UC Irvine/Ayres Hotels Diving Invitational in Irvine, Calif., on Sunday, January 4, Thibodaux placed fourth in the three-meter and fifth in the one-meter competition. The Texas native scored 236.10 points to finish just behind Holden from three meters, and 222.20 points to finish four spots ahead of her teammate from one meter.
San Jose State next heads to Davis, Calif., on Saturday, January 10, for a double dual meet with the host Aggies of UC Davis, and WAC rival Fresno State.
