Swimming Places Second At Ayres Relay Invitational

Irvine, Calif. - San Jose State University finished second among seven teams at the UC Irvine/Ayres Hotels Relay Invitational at UCI’s Anteater Aquatics Complex on Sunday, January 4.

The Spartans, the defending champions of the relay portion of the annual UCI/Ayres meet, scored 400 points and were edged by Nebraska with 423 points. Host UC Irvine was third with 268 points, while Western Athletic Conference foe University of San Diego was fifth (118).

San Jose State, which totaled 336 points to win a year ago, won three of the 10 relay events on Sunday, with the Cornhuskers taking the other seven. One of them was the 3x100 backstroke, with senior Lauren Mar swimming the second leg. Nebraska set new meet records in the 200 free relay (1:36.16) and the 400 free relay (3:29.62). UC Irvine won all 10 events to defend their Ayres title on the men’s side.

Mar was a top performer for the Spartans on the day, taking part in six events, all of them 'A' foursomes with the exception of the 'B' 200 medley relay to begin the day. She swam the lead backstroke legs of the 200 and 400 medley relays.

In the UCI/Ayres Diving Invitational, Spartan divers Jessica Holden (238.80) and Jo Thibodaux (236.10) placed third and fourth, respectively, from the three-meter springboard. Thibodaux, a sophomore, scored 222.20 points for fifth-place in the one-meter competition, with Holden, a true freshman, ninth (197.20). Cal State Bakersfield junior Victoria Kreutz, who dove at San Jose State as a freshman, won from both one meter (253.40) and three meters (258.10).

The Spartans will spend the night in Irvine, return to San Jose on Monday, January 5, and resume dual meet activity on the road next weekend, traveling to Davis, Calif., on Saturday, January 10. There, San Jose State will face the host Aggies of UC Davis, and new Western Athletic Conference rival Fresno State, in a double dual meet beginning at 1:00 p.m.
