Monterey Park, Calif. --- Improving on her personal best in the 100 backstroke for the second straight day, sophomore Colleen Humel posted a NCAA B qualifying time of 54.27 in the preliminary round as the San Jose State swimming team moves into fourth place on the second day of the A3 Performance Invitational on Friday, November 20.

“Overall we had a tremendous day and I am very happy with our overall performance,” said San Jose State head coach Sage Hopkins. “Our most notable performer was Colleen Humel, hitting an NCAA B cut in the morning prelims and having three tough and very strong races in the finals.”

Humel placed second in the 100 backstroke finals with a mark of 54.64 behind UCLA’s Linnea Mack. On Friday Humel posted a NCAA B standard qualifying mark swimming the first leg of the 400 medley relay in 54.57 seconds. Humel is third all-time in San Jose State history in the 100 backstroke.

“Our 200 medley relay was the highlight of the evening and I'm very happy with how all four of the really members swam,” Hopkins said.

The Spartans finished third in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:41.93 behind USC and UCLA. Competing for San Jose State in the relay was the team of Humel, junior Taylor Solorio, sophomore Brenna Bushey and senior Riley Spitser, posting the sixth best time in school history.
