Fresno, Calif. ----- For the second week in a row, the San Jose State University women's swimming and diving team won six of 16 events and lost a dual meet. Fresno State outscored the Spartans, 172-128.
"This meet was `a tale of two halves.' Our first half was nearly flawless and we were right where we needed to be going into the first diving break. In the second half of the meet, Fresno did a much better job of picking up the second and third place points in events that were crucial for us," said San Jose State head coach Sage Hopkins.
Colleen Humel and Brenna Bushey had first-place individual finishes and were part of the winning 200 medley relay to start the meet. Humel finished first with a time of 1:53.30 in the 200 free and Bushey with a time of 56.27 in the 100 butterfly. Humel and Bushey combined with Taylor Solorio and Taylor Lehr for first in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:45.03.
Gabby Heng finished first with a time of 24.19 in the 50 free. Cari Reiswig won the 1 meter dive with a score of 282.83. Taylor Solorio one of four seniors honored before the meet, was first in the 100 free in 52.19.
"I'm very happy with how our seniors performed today. They did great," Hopkins said about Solorio, Lisa Ellis, Jenner Johnson and Allyson Fellows. Johnson was fourth in the 200 breast and 200 back; and Fellows, third in the 1000 free. Ellis swam in both relay events for the Spartans.
"I would like to thank Fresno for hosting our senior ceremony. That was very classy of them and I'm very appreciative."
San Jose State finishes its dual meet season with a 4-3 win-loss record.
The Spartans' next meet is the Mountain West Championships, February 15-18 in College Station, Texas.
