San Jose, Calif. --- One of five Spartan seniors honored on Senior Day, distance swimmer Riley Spitser remains undefeated in home dual meets in the 500-yard freestyle this season as the San Jose State women's swimming and diving team falls to the Nevada Wolf Pack of Nevada, 173-120.
Spitser grabbed her eight win in the 500 freestyle for the Spartans (6-3), beating out Nevada's Toni Baerens with a time of 4:58.01. In the 1000-yard freestyle, Spitser trailed Toni Baerens at the midway point before capturing the lead on lap 15 to built a 7.45 second lead in the win with a time of 10:07.64, giving her two victories over the Wolf Pack (4-0).
Senior Brynne Beneke picked up her second win at home in the 50-yard freestyle this season, touching in 24.12 while sophomores Brenna Bushey, Brittany Heng and Angel Van Hofwegen placed fourth, fifth and sixth.
Finishing second behind Nevada's Teresa Baerens in the 100-yard freestyle was sophomore Taylor Lehr with a touch of 52.15. Touching a split second behind Lehr in the 100 freestyle was Beneke in third place with a time of 52.19.
Sophomore Taylor Solorio earned first place points for the Spartans in the 100 individual medley, touching in 1:00.20 to improve on her personal best time. Behind Solorio was sophomore Colleen Humel placed second in points with seniors Amanda Buxbaum and Alli Davis finishing third and fourth. In the 200-yard freestyle, Davis and Lehr finished in a three-four combination.
Solorio also finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke with Buxbaum in fifth and senior Natasha Moffitt in sixth for San Jose State. With a shuffling of finishes in the 200-yard breaststroke, Buxbaum came in fourth with Solorio and Moffitt finishing fifth and sixth.
Continuing to stay on pace with her top times in the butterfly events, freshman Marley Maluafiti placed third in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 56.96 and second in the 200-yard butterfly.
The Spartans captured two wins over the Wolf Pack in the relay events. In the 200-yard medley relay, Beneke was joined by Solorio, Humel and sophomore Brenna Bushey to edge out Nevada by .25 seconds for the victory. San Jose State's relay team of Beneke, Spitser, Van Hofwegen and freshman Kimberlee Giggey nabbed a first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay with the time of 1:35.76.
In the 3-meter springboard, sophomore diver Cari Reiswig finishes third for San Jose State with a score of 301.96 and freshman Megan Au scored 228.38, setting a season personal best. Au's previous best was 224.00 set against UC San Diego, San Diego State and Incarnate Word. Reiswig placed fifth with San Jose State's best score in the 1-meter springboard of 292.73.
