Berkeley, Calif.-- The San José State beach volleyball team ended the historic 2016 season with an upset-victory of #14 California, 3-2, Friday afternoon in Berkeley.
The Spartans won the first two matches of the day in the dual. Summer Avery and Luiza Andrade finished the season 4-0 with a 21-16, 21-12 win to start the day for SJSU. Nandyala Gama and Julie Sam won the second point with a hard-fought 27-25, 15-21, 15-13 win on Friday. Gama and Sam finished the season with a 7-3 record including 6-0 in the number-four position.
California won the next two points to tie the dual at 2-2. Tyanna Roy and Lyndi Scholl won the first set, 21-18, before falling 21-16 and 15-8. They finish the season with a 6-14 record. Jamie Hirai and Allison Meehan also lost a three-set match, winning 22-20, before losing 21-10 and 18-16. The pair finishes with an 11-9 record including 10-1 in the number-three position.
The dual came down to the number-one position and Spartans Hana Tresnáková and Julia Menhart. The pair then swept the Bears, 21-17 and 21-9, to give San José State the 3-2 win. Tresnáková and Menhart finished the season with a 12-7 record.
"This was a strong finish to an important season of growth for our team and program," said Spartan head coach Aaron Shepardson. "Even in our last week of play, we are learning what it means to never stop fighting. It has been our privilege as coaches work with our seniors, Julia, Alli and Tyanna, who have shown a true commitment to building this program and a dedication to their own development as competitors."
San José State finishes the 2016 season with a 9-11 record, two wins over California, a win over Stanford and the program's first win on March 6 over Sacramento State, 3-2. The Spartans will say goodbye to three seniors - Meehan, Menhart and Roy.
