Skadeland, Diffinè Win Set In Contest With San Francisco

April 9, 2014

Los Gatos, Calif.-- Lindsay Skadeland and Brittney Diffinè forced a third set in their match on Wednesday as the San Jose State University sand volleyball team fell to San Francisco, 5-0, at Los Gatos High School.

Skadeland and Diffinè played in the number-four position and took the second set against Emily Reed and Inbar Vinarsky 21-13, forcing a fifth set that Reed and Vinarsky won 15-10.

"Lindsey and Brittney came on real strong," said Spartan head coach Aaron Shepardson. "They had a great strategy. Lindsey was a wonderful force blocking today in that role, and they were able to come back and take that second set."

No other Spartan duo could win a set for the team.  But Shepardson sees improvement in the first-year team and learning with every competition.

"Just in the last week, we are starting to make some breakthroughs in the understanding of the game and keep a rhythm to our game and not too frazzled and scrambling around for the ball all the time. Just the basic skills - the pass, the set, the attack and the serve - are all under control more now. We were able to compete in the games. These games aren't getting from us like they were (earlier).

"We know what we are doing now. It's a matter of executing more often. We just need reps and time and practice with that stuff. I think the thing for all of our teams today was we were in a lot of our sets. We were in a lot of competitive situations. We have to learn how to maintain our focus and continue to compete and continue to play hard."

The Spartans play the final two matches of the season on Saturday, April 19, at Sacramento State against the Hornets at 11 a.m., and California at 2 p.m.
