Berkeley, Calif.--Spartans Jamie Hirai and Summer Avery, playing in the number-five position for the first time this season, went 2-0 Friday for the San José State beach volleyball team as the team played Saint Mary's and California in Berkeley.
Against Saint Mary's, Hirai and Avery swept the Gaels, 21-16, 21-67 to score one of the two Spartan points. The pair needed three sets against the Golden Bears, dropping the first set 21-17, before rebounding to win 21-19 and 15-12. The pair is now 2-1 overall on the season and 2-0 in the fifth position.
In the first dual of the day, the Spartans fell to Saint Mary's, 3-2. Avery and Hirai were victorious, along with Giulia Gávio and Luiza Andrade who need three sets to win 21-23, 21-19, 15-12. Two Spartan pairs went to three sets in their matches, each winning their first set before falling in the final two- Julia Golbeck and Kaitlynn Zdroik won 21-16 before falling 21-15 and 15-7; while Allison Meehan and Lyndi Scholl won 21-19 before losing 21-17 and 15-6. Nandyala Gama and Julie Sam fell in the number-two position, 21-8, 23-21.
Against #14 California, Hirai and Avery scored in the only Spartan point in the 4-1 loss. All four pairs fell in straight sets.
San José State also played an exhibition against West Valley College on Thursday, March 23. The team won 5-0, and all five pairs won in straight sets.
The Spartans are next in action at the Monterey Invitational II on Sunday, April 2, facing defending national champions USC at 12 p.m., and Saint Mary's at 2:30 p.m. The team will also play and exhibition against West Valley at 9:30 a.m.
