Sand Volleyball Finishes Eighth At NorCal Invitational

Stanford, Calif.--In day two of competition at the NorCal Invitational, the San José State volleyball team won two matches and finished eighth in the team portion of the tournament on Saturday.

In the morning competition against California, Spartans Sara Hibbs and Julie Sam needed three sets to defeat Sammy Furlan and Ashley Johnson, 15-21, 21-18, 15-9. Nandyala Gama and Bre Moreland took Sarah Cole and Emily Lunt of California to three sets before falling 18-21, 21-10, 15-13. The Spartans fell to the GoldenBears 4-1.

In the seventh-place match, Gama and Moreland scored the only point for San José State in the 4-1 loss to San Francisco. The pair won in straight sets, 21-10, 21-13, over Jessica Gaffney and Sara Staengle. SpartansSummer Avery and Yavialniz Rosado won their first set over Kiara McKibben and Katarina Pilepic 21-10 before falling 21-12 and 15-11.

"We are very proud of our players for the strides they are making this weekend," said Spartan head coach Aaron Shepardson. "Each pair is growing in their abilities and experiences and, for most, their first sand volleyball competition ever. Sara Hibbs and Julie Sam recorded our first Division I victory in program history, followed by Nandyala and Bre."

The pairs tournament began Saturday afternoon at the NorCal Invitational and continues on Sunday.
