Tucson, Ariz.— The San José State beach volleyball split a pair of duals on Sunday, defeating Benedictine Mesa, 5-0, before falling to host Arizona, 5-0, at the Cactus Classic hosted by the Wildcats.
The Spartans swept Benedictine Mesa 5-0 and won every match 2-0. Ciara Reistad and Julia Golbeck played in the number-one position, while Nandyala Gama and Lyndi Scholl won at the number-two position. Jamie Hirai and Hayley Sturgeon won at the number-three position. Breann Robinson and Luiza Andrade played together at the number-four position, while Summer Avery and Kaitlynn Zdroik played at number five.
San Jose State then played host Arizona, with the Wildcats winning 5-0. Two Spartan pairs went three sets in their match. Gama and Scholl fell 21-7 in the first set before rallying in set to win 23-21. The pairs then went to the brink, with the Wildcats winning 15-13. Robinson and Andrade also went three sets, falling 21-18, before winning set two 21-17, but fell 15-7 in the third set.
San Jose State is now 3-1 on the season. The team next plays on Friday, March 2. The team faces West Valley College in an exhibition at 12 p.m., followed by California at 4 p.m. Both duals will be played on the West Valley College campus in Saratoga, Calif.
