Softball Signs Seven For 2013 Season

San Jose-Seven players - Kaylie Garcia, Sydney Halleen, Jessie Hufstetler, Alyssa Martinez, Briana Pontecorvo, Taylor Purdy and Casey Watt, have signed National Letters-of-Intent to play softball at San Jose State University beginning with the 2013 season, as announced by Spartan head coach Peter Turner.

 

Garcia, an infielder from Colton High School, was a first team All-CIF Division II selection last season.  Her junior year, she hit .472 with 12 doubles, 29 RBI and three home runs.  Garcia is a two-time first team all-league selection.  She plays travel ball for Riptide Gold.

 

Halleen is a utility player at North High School in Torrance.  Last season, she was a first team all-league selection and named to the Daily Breeze All-Area team.  Her team won the CIF Division V Championship her freshman year.  She plays travel ball for Mizuno Pride.

 

Hufstetler, a utility player at Atascadero High School, hit .512 her junior year with a school-record 49 RBI and five home runs.  She is a two-time first team All-Pac-7 and all-county selection.  An all-around athlete, she also lettered in soccer and volleyball and received the Scholar Athlete Award in volleyball.  Hufstetler plays travel ball for the Fresno Force 18 Gold.

 

Martinez, a utility player at Wasco High School, was the 2011 Most Valuable Player of the South Sequoia League.  She hit .675 with 13 doubles, eight home runs and 44 RBI, while, in the circle, she was 21-5 with a 2.10 ERA.  Martinez is a three-time first team All- South Sequoia League selection and helped her team win the 2011 SSL championship.  She plays travel ball for the Central California Dirt Dogs.

 

Pontecorvo, an infielder/pitcher at Hanford West High School, hit .338 last season with 27 hits, 23 RBI and a team-best 11 doubles.  She added a .513 slugging percentage and .979 fielding percentage.  In the circle, she had a 15-4 record with a 1.61 ERA in 100 innings pitched.  Pontecorvo is a two-time West Yosemite League second team selection and named to the 2011 Sentinel All-Kings County softball team.  She plays travel ball for the Central California Dirt Dogs 18 Gold.

 

Purdy is a short stop at Barstow High School.  She was an All-CIF Southern Section honoree and a first team All-Desert Sky League honoree her junior year.  Purdy won the DSL Triple Crown last season with a .562 batting average, 42 RBI and six home runs.  She added a 1.034 slugging percentage, 12 doubles and six triples.  For her accolades last season, Purdy was named the Daily Press Softball Athlete of the Year.  She plays travel ball for California Lite U18 Gold.  The 2011 team was second in the state and third at the Premier Nationals.

 

Watt is an infielder from Salinas High School.  She was a first team All-Tri-County Athletic League selection as well as all-county pick by the Salinas Californian and the Monterey Bay Herald last season.  Watt helped lead her team to the CCS Playoffs last season.  She is also a member of her high school tennis team where she was a two-time TCAL doubles champion.  Watt plays travel ball for the Salinas Wildcats Gold.  Her father, Andy Watt, is the head softball coach and assistant football coach at Hartnell College.
