Spartans Fall To Arizona State, 5-2

Tempe, Ariz. – The San Jose State University softball team dropped its opening game of the 2013 NCAA Softball Regional to No. 4 Arizona State, 5-2 on Friday afternoon in Farrington Stadium on the campus of Arizona State University.


The Spartans (42-16) have scored 33 percent of its runs this season in the first or second inning, and Friday’s game was no exception. Devin Caldwell and Markesha Collins combined to give the Spartans’ the lead in the first inning when Sun Devil left fielder Elizabeth Caparuscio committed a fielding error. Arizona State (46-10) answered San Jose State’s 2-0 lead in the bottom of the inning with Amber Freeman’s solo home run to left.

In the fifth, the Sun Devils took a 3-2 lead when Cheyenne Coyle singled to shortstop BranDee Garcia. Garcia’s throw to first was out of Jessie Hufstetler’s reach, allowing Bailey Wigness to score the unearned run from third.

Arizona State tacked on two more runs in the sixth. Haley Steele hit a leadoff homer to left and Nikki Girard had an RBI-double for the final 5-2 score.


Sun Devil pitcher Dallas Escobedo was stellar in the circle, throwing the first postseason no-hitter in Arizona State history. She struck out five Spartans and walked three.

Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Pitcher of the Year Amanda Pridmore’s (29-10) 13-game winning streak came to an end Friday. She scattered eight hits and struck out three, walking one.


San Jose State continues its play at the NCAA Tempe Regional on Saturday, May 18. The Spartans face San Diego State at 5:30 p.m. (PDT) on ESPNU. Earlier this season, San Jose State lost a close game against the Aztecs, 2-0, at the San Diego Classic II.
