Spartans Use 3-Run Seventh for 6-5 Win At WAC Tournament

Las Cruces, N.M.—San Jose State scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning, all with two outs, and the Spartan softball team came from behind to defeat Louisiana Tech, 6-5, in the opening game of the 2010 Western Athletic Conference Softball Tournament.

The number “3” was lucky for the Spartans on Wednesday as the team used two three-run innings in the win. The first lucky inning came in the second when BranDee Garcia drove in two runs with a single, and Alyssa Sulay scored on a Louisiana Tech throwing error.

San Jose State did not really threaten again, leaving just one runner on base the next four innings, before scoring three more runs in the seventh for the win. All three runs in the seventh were scored with two out.

After Kelli Fangonilo and Sarah Taylor each struck out to start the seventh, Julianne Aiello, a second team All-WAC honoree, hit her third home run of the year down the left field line. Brittany McConnell, also a second team All-WAC selection, then singled and was pinch ran for by Markesha Collins. Ursula Lopez then reached on an error to put two Spartans on base, and both runners advanced a base on a passed ball. Breanna Lopez then singled to center field to score both runners and give San Jose State the lead for good.

The Spartans also got a solid performance from pitcher Amanda Pridmore. She pitched her 16th complete game of the year to improve her record to 17-11. Pridmore struck out nine Lady Techsters, her second-highest total of the season, and walked three. She allowed six hits and five runs, only two earned in her 37th appearance of the year.

San Jose State now faced top-seeded Hawaii Thursday at 11:30 a.m. MDT/10:30 PDT. Live audio/video is available on, while a live stats link is on the Spartan web site. If San Jose State wins, the team plays Friday at 2 p.m. MDT. If the team loses, the Spartans will play at 4:30 p.m. MDT/3:30 p.m. PDT.
