Softball Takes Game One Of WAC Tournament

Ruston, La. – Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Pitcher of the Year Amanda Pridmore allowed just three hits and Jessie Hufstetler drove in the winning run as the top-seeded San Jose State University softball team beat the UTSA Roadrunners, 1-0, in the Spartans’ opening game of the WAC Tournament on Thursday.

The game was scoreless through 6.1 innings. But in the bottom of the seventh, first team All-WAC honoree Markesha Collins was hit by Roadrunner Haylee Staton’s pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Jessie Hufstetler lined a single to left field and Collins sprinted around the bases to score the 1-0 walk-off run.

A pitchers’ duel, Amanda Pridmore (27-9) and Staton (15-10) allowed three hits each. Pridmore earned her 27th win of the season, striking out six batters with one walk. Staton, who suffered the loss for UTSA (27-25), recorded four strikeouts, all of which came in the first-two innings.

“The last time we played UTSA (on March 29 and 30), they faced a different Pridmore because she had been sidelined by the flu,” WAC Coach of the Year Peter Turner said. “But today, they saw her at 100 percent and at 100 percent, there is a reason she is the best in the league. She challenged them, and we won today because we had the best pitcher.”

The Spartans (40-15) are now one of 19 Division I softball teams to have at least 40 wins this season. “Three years ago, we were the youngest team in the NCAA and had 19 wins,” Turner said. “To more than double than win total is a testimony to my staff, our recruiting efforts and a very talented bunch of athletes that play well together as a team.”

The top-seeded Spartans’ WAC Tournament journey continues tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. (PDT). They face the winner of today’s 12:00 p.m. (PDT) game between #2-seed New Mexico State and #4-seed Louisiana Tech. Said Turner of the Spartans’ next opponent, “Everyone is here for a reason, and every team is going to give us good competition. As long as we play like we have the last four games, things will take care of themselves.”
