Softball Loses Marathon On Senior Day

San Jose—The Spartan softball seniors didn’t want the day to end, playing almost five hours of softball in two games. But San Jose State lost the marathon to New Mexico State, 2-1 and 8-7 in 10 innings in a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader.

The Spartan seniors had significant roles in the second game, highlighted by Mallory Bair’s triple to left center to score two runs in a four-run sixth inning. Bair then scored on fellow senior Kelli Fangonilo’s single to left center. Fangonilo then scored on an Aggie fielding error to tie the game at 7-7.

Fangonilo started the second game with a single and ended up on third on an Aggie fielding error. She scored on a Julianne Aiello single. Brittany McConnell then doubled to center field for her 41st of her career and one away from the San Jose State career record. Aiello scored on an illegal pitch, and McConnell eventually scored on a BranDee Garcia single to take the early 3-0 lead.

The score remained tied at 7-7 until the 10th inning when New Mexico State pushed a run across and the Spartans left the bases loaded to end the 3-hour and six-minute game.

All four Spartan pitchers made an appearance in the second game. Amanda Pridmore pitched the final four innings as her record fell to 16-11. She struck out five and walked just one while allowing six hits and one run.

In the first game, the Aggies took a 2-0 lead on solo home runs in the fourth and fifth innings. San Jose State responded with a run in the fifth as Cheryl Freitas doubled to center field to score Markesha Collins.

San Jose State now advances to the 2010 WAC Softball Tournament in Las Cruces. The Spartans enter as the fifth seed and place fourth-seeded Louisiana Tech Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. MDT. If the Spartans win, they play top-seed Hawaii Thursday at 11:30 a.m. MDT. If the Spartans lose Wednesday, they will play Thursday at 7 p.m. MDT. All games will be show on WAC.tv for a nominal fee, and live stats will be available through the Spartan web site.
