Softball Makes History In 2-1 Win

San Jose, Calif. – The 2013 San Jose State University softball team became the winningest team in school history after a 2-1 walk-off Western Athletic Conference (WAC) win over New Mexico State on Friday.

With the Spartans' 37th win of the season, they pass the 1989 and 2005 Spartans for the most wins in the program's history.

The win also keeps San Jose State (37-15, 15-4 WAC) in contention for the WAC regular season title. They need to sweep their doubleheader Saturday to be the WAC regular season champion. New Mexico State needs to win at least one game to secure the conference’s top spot.

“We knew today was going to be one of those games where whoever blinks first loses,” head coach Peter Turner said. “That was what happened in this game, and it came down to the last inning.”

With the score tied 1-1, San Jose State leadoff hitter Devin Caldwell hit the ball to Aggies second baseman Tehani Kaaihue which she bobbled, allowing Caldwell to reach first. Three batters later, Cheryl Freitas hit a sacrifice fly to center field, and Caldwell sprinted from third to score the 2-1 walk-off run.

Amanda Pridmore’s (24-9) 24th win of the season tied her with Carol Forbes (2002-05) at 68 for the most-career wins in San Jose State history. Pridmore fanned six batters and scattered four hits, walking three, in the complete game performance.

Turner said of Pridmore’s performance, “She was untouchable and dominating in the beginning of the game, and that got us far.”

Alex Newman (22-10) suffered the loss for New Mexico State (35-16, 16-3 WAC) allowed six hits, walked two batters and struck out three. She did not have any earned runs scored against her.

Michelle Cox led the Spartans at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

San Jose State hosts the Aggies on Saturday, May 4, at SJSU Field for its final doubleheader of the season, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
