Trailing 2-0 heading into the top of the seventh, the Spartans got the first three batters on base to start the inning. Amanda Schatz got an infield single, Alex Stange single through the right side and Annica Wolfe drew a four-pitch walk. With one out, BranDee Garcia grounded out to score Lauren Shanks, pinch running for Schatz, from third base. Pinch hitter Markesha Collins struck out swinging to end the game.
"This was a tough game for us today," said Spartan head coach Peter Turner. "We put ourselves in a position to win. We had three solid at bats to start the seventh inning. Then, we did not put the ball in play anywhere so that we could tie the game."
The Spartans played with heavy hearts on Friday after learning about the death of former teammate and pitcher Deanna Mauer who played at San Jose State in 2008 and 2009. Mauer died Wednesday night after being involved in a rear-end collision in Southern California. Louisiana Tech honored Mauer with a moment of silence before the game, and players on both teams wore black ribbons to honor her.
San Jose State had just three hits in the game, two in the seventh and one by Britney Helm in the third inning.
Spartan starting pitcher Elyssa Fox went the first five innings, allowing seven hits and both runs. She struck out five and did not walk a batter. Alex Molina pitched the final inning and recorded a strikeout.
The two teams play a doubleheader Saturday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m. CDT.
