Spartans' Hot Bats Give Them Doubleheader Sweep

San Marcos, Texas – The bats of the San Jose State University softball team were on fire Friday and led them to a Western Athletic Conference (WAC) doubleheader sweep at Texas State, with 3-0 and 8-2 wins.

The doubleheader sweep was the Spartans’ 12th of the year. They are now tied for the most conference series wins in San Jose State (36-14, 14-3 WAC) history, winning its sixth conference series, the most since 1991.

“Good players make coaches look great,” said head coach Peter Turner. “This team takes each inning at a time and does a good job of not looking any further ahead than what is in front of them.

“Today, we squared the ball up well, and I was proud of the way we moved the ball and the big hits we were getting.”

COLLINS’ BLAST HANDS GIVES SPARTANS THE WIN

Game one was scoreless for 6.2 innings until Markesha Collins’ bombed her ninth homerun of the year. With Michelle Cox and BranDee Garcia on first and second, respectively, Collins blasted the homer on her first pitch for the 3-0 final score.

Said Turner of Collins’ performance, “Markesha is great at getting those big hits for us, and there aren’t many as big as that one.”

Starting pitcher Allison Lang struck out two, walked one and allowed four hits in 5.1 innings of work.

Allison Lang did an awesome job today,” said Turner. “She threw extremely well, and she gave us the innings we needed this weekend.”

Amanda Pridmore threw 1.2 perfect innings in relief and earned her 22nd win of 2013. Texas State (13-35, 7-10 WAC) pitchers Rayn House (5-16) and Delia Saucedo scattered a combined seven hits, walking five and striking out three batters.

SPARTANS’ BATS CATCH FIRE IN GAME TWO

In game two, the Spartans’ bats found their groove. In the third with the score tied at two, Cheryl Freitas rocketed a leadoff homer to give the Spartans a 3-2 lead. San Jose State scored one run in the fourth and fifth innings, and had a three-run seventh for the final 8-2 score.

San Jose State recorded a season-high 16 hits and 11 Spartans had at least one hit following both games. On the day, Jessie Hufstetler was 5-for-8 with a double and an RBI, Michelle Cox went 3-for-6 with a run and an RBI, and Devin Caldwell was 3-for-9 with two runs and two RBI.

Amanda Pridmore (23-9) scattered six hits, striking out three and walking one in the complete-game win. Delia Saucedo (1-3) suffered the loss for the Bobcats, scattering 15 hits with a walk and two stirkeouts.

San Jose State wraps up its series at Texas State on Saturday, April 27, at 11:00 a.m. (PDT).
