Softball Falls To Texas State In Series Finale

San Marcos, Texas – The San Jose State University softball team homered in its third-consecutive game, but Texas State’s timely hitting handed them a 10-2, five-inning victory in their Western Athletic Conference (WAC) series finale on Saturday.

After a doubleheader sweep on Friday, the Spartans win the series, 2-1.

“We are a good hitting team up and down, and we’re good defensively, but we have to do the things we are trained to do,” said head coach Peter Turner. “Today, we did not do that.”

The Bobcats (14-35, 8-10 WAC) took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. With the bases loaded, Courtney Harris got an RBI-sacrifice fly and Anna Hernandez bunted in the second run for the 2-0 score.

In the fourth, the Spartans (36-15, 14-4 WAC)  knotted the score at two. Vanessa House blasted a two-run homerun to left field, making the score 2-2. It was the third San Jose State homerun in as many games.

But a one-out rally by the Bobcats in the bottom of the inning restored their lead, and Texas State added five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the game at 10-2.

Jordan Sauceda (3-1) suffered the loss for the Spartans, scattering two hits with two walks and a strikeout. Starting pitcher Madison Fish allowed one hit and two runs, walking three, in 0.2 innings of work. Allison Lang scattered four hits, walking five and striking out two, in 1.1 innings of relief.

Rayn House (6-16) earned the win for the Bobcats, scattering five hits and walking one in five innings.

San Jose State hosts first-place New Mexico State at SJSU Field for its final series of 2013 before the WAC Tournament May 8-11 at Louisiana Tech. Said Turner of the series, “Our focus is to put ourselves in a position to control our own destiny going into next weekend.”

The Spartans and Aggies play a single game on Friday, May 3, at 3:00 p.m. (PDT) and a doubleheader on Saturday, May 4, beginning at 12:00 p.m. (PDT). The Spartans will honor their five seniors at the Deanna Mauer Patio behind left field following the second game.
