Collins One Hit Short Of Cycle Friday

San Jose-Markesha Collins was a triple away from a cycle Friday afternoon and scored two of the Spartans' five runs as San Jose State fell to Nevada, 8-5, in a Western Athletic Conference game at SJSU Field.

 

Collins led off the third inning with a double for her first hit of the day.  She scored her first run of the day on a BranDee Garcia single to center field and was the only run of the inning for San Jose State.

 

In the fifth, Collins led off the inning with her first home run of the season to right center field.  She scored one of the Spartans four runs in the inning to get San Jose State to within two runs at 6-4. 

 

Collins recorded her single in the sixth inning.  With a full count, she hit a bloop single to left field, but was left stranded on base to end the inning.

 

"I was really proud of Markesha's effort today," said Spartan head coach Peter Turner.  "She has not been hitting great this year but really stepped it up today.  She has been working hard to get better and not quit.  Today, all of her effort paid off for her."

 

The Spartans fell behind 3-0 after two innings before Collins scored in the third inning.  Nevada scored three more runs in the fourth inning to extend their lead to 6-1.

 

San Jose State scored four runs in the fifth inning, starting with Collins' home run to lead off the inning.  With two outs. San Jose State got back-to-back hits from Breanna Lopez and Dorothy MorentinAlex Stange then reached base on a Wolf Pack throwing error to score Lopez and advance the runners a base.  Annica Wolfe single to right field to score Morentin, and Cheryl Freitas doubled to left center to score Stange before Wolfe was thrown out trying to score.

 

Starter Jennifer Ames pitched the first 3.2 innings and allowed seven hits, six runs and two walks while striking out two.  Alex Molina pitched the next 2.2 innings as she allowed three hits and two runs.  Janessa Gutierrez got the final two outs, striking out one of the three batters faced.

 

The two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday afternoon beginning at 12 p.m., at SJSU Field.
