Softball Gets Hits, Runs, Ties Record In Sweep

Logan, Utah-San Jose State scored 20 runs on 22 hits in a sweep at Utah State, 11-2 and 9-1 in six innings, Friday afternoon in a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Jessica Garcia and Markesha Collins were just two of the keys to the Spartan offense.  Garcia drove in nine runs in the two games, four in game one and five in game two, and went 5-for-9 from the plate with two runs scored and a home run in game two.  In the first game, she had two hits and scored a run.  Garcia then followed with three hits in four at bats in game two with the five RBI.

Collins led off the first game with a home run, her third of the year, and drove in another run later in the game.  In the second game, Collins tied the school record for runs scored in a game with four.  She tied teammate Michelle Cox who has done the feat twice this season and former Spartan Courtney Lewis.  Collins went 2-or-2 from the plate in the second game with two RBI, including a double.  She also stole a base in each game.

"Jessica and Markesha had break out days today," said Spartan head coach Peter Turner.  "It was nice to start the first game the way Markesha did.  They are seeing the ball really well, and today was their time to make huge contributions to this team."

In the first game, the Spartans got 11 hits from eight players.  BranDee Garcia led the hit parade as she went 3-for-3 from the plate with two runs scored and an RBI. Cheryl Freitas' only hit was a solo home run to lead off the second inning.

The first four hitters of the game two Spartan lineup went 7-for-11 with six runs scored and seven runs driven in.  BranDee Garcia added to her offensive totals as she was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Spartan pitcher Amanda Pridmore pitched 12.1 innings on the day as she got two wins to improve her record to 16-9 on the season.  She moved into sixth on the San Jose State single season win list.  Pridmore struck out nine batters on the day and now has 151 on the season, tying her total from 2010 for the sixth-best total in a season.

"Today was one of those days that we got hits up and down the lineup," said Turner.  "It also showed that we are a better hitting team than our average.  We are maturing everyday and getting better every game."

San Jose State improves to 25-20 overall and 8-4 in the WAC. The Spartans finish the series with Utah State Saturday with a single game beginning at 12 p.m., MDT.  There will be no live stats for this game.
