Softball Gets Walk-Off 14-Inning Win

San Jose, Calif. - The San Jose State University softball team battled the UT Arlington Mavericks for 13.2 shutout innings, but BranDee Garcia scored on Devin Caldwell’s walk-off RBI single in the 14th and gave the Spartans a 1-0 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) victory.

“We played great defense and we had great pitching,” said Head Coach Peter Turner. “Two-thirds of the game was there, and that is why we won.”

With two outs in the 14th inning and BranDee Garcia on second, Devin Caldwell hit a sharp single to Maverick second baseman Kallan Thompson. Caldwell sprinted down the line to beat the throw to first, and BranDee Garcia sprinted around the bases ahead of the throw home for the walk-off 1-0 run.

“We can turn singles into doubles and walks into doubles with BranDee (Garcia), (Michelle) Cox, (Vanessa) House and a few others,” Turner said, “and that quickness has been very beneficially for us.”

Amanda Pridmore (20-9) tied the San Jose State (32-14, 10-3 WAC) record for innings pitched in a game with her 14-inning performance. She struck out 11 batters and scattered eight hits, walking one. Teri Lyles (16-9) suffered the loss for the Mavericks (17-20, 2-8 WAC), striking out five, walking three and allowing 11 hits.

“Pridmore pitched an outstanding game,” Turner said. “She looked as if she had all of her stuff back and is fully healthy.”

Michelle Cox set a school record with four stolen bases in the game. She also led the Spartans at the plate, reaching base on five of her six at bats with three hits. Said Turner, “We have a very quick team and she is an integral part of that. Cox is an international caliber player and she has made a huge contribution to our team.”

San Jose State hosts UT Arlington Saturday, April 20, at SJSU Field for a WAC doubleheader at 12:00 p.m.
