Stanford, Calif.-A seventh-inning Spartan rally fell short Tuesday night as the San Jose State softball team fell to #11 Stanford 3-1 at the Smith Family Stadium.
After falling behind 3-0, the Spartans got back-to-back hits by Sadie Coenen and Breanna Lopez to put runners on the corners. With two outs, Annica Wolfe singled up the middle to score Coenen from third. With runners on the second and third, Cheryl Freitas grounded out to the Cardinal short stop to end the game.
Spartan starter Janessa Gutierrez pitched four shut out innings before allowing three runs in the fifth inning. She allowed five hits and three walks in four-plus innings of work as her record fell to 4-3. Reliever Elyssa Fox pitched the final two innings, allowing just one walk and striking out two.
"This was very encouraging for us, especially with our next games at Fresno State," said Spartan head coach Peter Turner. "It was nice to see us battle in the seventh inning and not give up."
San Jose State returns to Western Athletic Conference action this weekend with a three-game series at Fresno State. Friday night's game begins at 6 p.m., followed by a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
