Schatz Doubles Twice In Softball's 9-6 Loss

San Jose-Amanda Schatz hit two doubles, and Cheryl Freitas added two hits, but the Spartan softball team could not stop the big innings again on Friday.  Utah State won 9-6 Friday in a Western Athletic Conference game at SJSU Field.

Both of Schatz's doubles led to runs scoring for the Spartans sometime in each inning.  In the fifth inning, she doubled to right field to score Sadie Coenen from second who had also doubled in the inning.  Schatz's other double went to center field in the seventh inning.  She eventually scored on a groundout by Annica Wolfe.

After three scoreless innings, the Spartans scored first with two runs in the fourth inning.  Lauren Shanks pinch ran for Alex Stange who started the inning by drawing a walk.  Shanks eventually scored on Freitas' double to right field.  Wolfe, who got on base with a single, scored from third on an Aggie wild pitch.

But, Utah State broke the game open in the top of the fifth inning as the Aggies scored six run on six hits along with one Spartan error.  They scored three runs before an out was made, partly because of a fielding error by BranDee Garcia as she dropped the ball on a tag play.

The Spartans cut the Aggie lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth as Coenen scored on Schatz's double.  But San Jose State could not hold Utah State down as the Aggies added three runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Spartan starter Jennifer Ames pitched just 4.1 innings and allowed 10 hits, six runs, five earned and one walk while striking out two.  Janessa Gutierrez pitched one inning of relief as she allowed four hits, three runs and two walks.  Alex Molina pitched the final 1.2 innings and allowed two hits and a walk.

"When you give up 16 hits and make pivotal errors at crucial times, we are outmatched anybody," said Spartan head coach Peter Turner.  "This team concerns me because they let youth become a convenient excuse and get in the way of victory. We need get zeros up the scoreboard especially after we score runs so that we can get back on offense."

The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m., on SJSU Field.
