Softball Wins WAC Series With Day Two Sweep

San Jose, Calif. – The San Jose State University softball team swept its 10th doubleheader of the season by scores of 10-7 and 6-3 against Western Athletic Conference (WAC) foe Seattle U on Saturday.

“Today, we moved the ball well like we should have,” said Head Coach Peter Turner. “Two-thirds of our game was on: hitting and pitching.”

The Spartans enjoyed their best day offensively since the start of WAC play,  rapping out 20 hits and scoring 16 runs. Michelle Cox led the team, going 6-for-8 with three runs and two RBI. Taylor Purdy and Jessica Garcia were each 3-for-7 with two runs and three RBI, while Devin Caldwell was 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBI.

Spartans’ Early Lead Too Much For Redhawks

In game one, San Jose State (29-12, 7-2 WAC) scored in each of its first four innings for the first time this year, getting the leadoff hitter on in each.

The first inning saw five runs scored on three hits. Jessica Garcia’s first of two doubles on the day pushed across two.

In the second, the Spartans scored two more to take a 7-0 lead. Jessica Garcia drove in her third run of the game on a ground out.

Seattle U (14-23, 3-6 WAC) got within two after a five-run third inning. Bubba Morrow and Lisa Maulden each knocked in two for the Redhawks to make the score 7-5.

The Spartans tacked on another run in the bottom of the third and each team pushed across two runs in its fourth inning to make it 10-7 San Jose State, which would be the final score.

Madison Fish (4-2) picked up the win, allowing seven runs in four innings. Amanda Pridmore earned her seventh save of the year after entering the game in the fifth. She allowed one hit and struck out four.

Pridmore Solid In The Circle In Game Two

Pridmore (17-9), whose seven saves lead the nation, took the ball in game two and earned a complete-game win. She scattered four hits while striking out seven. This is the sixth time this season that Pridmore has been involved in the decision on both ends of a doubleheader sweep.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, San Jose State got a two-out RBI-single from Taylor Purdy to knot the score, 1-1.

Back-to-back runs in the third gave the Spartans their first lead of the game. Jessica Garcia got her second double of the day, moving Vanessa House to third. House scored on a fly-out off the bat of Purdy, and Jessica Garcia was pushed across by a Cheryl Freitas double to right center for a 3-1 advantage.

After bringing the score within one in the fourth, Seattle U tied it at 3-3 in the top of the sixth. But San Jose State scored three-consecutive runs in the bottom of the inning off of RBI-doubles by Markesha Collins and Michelle Cox, and a sacrifice fly by Annica Wolfe, for the final score of 6-3.

San Jose State’s 11 hits in game two marked the ninth time the team recorded double-digit hits. Of his team’s strong play at the plate, Turner said, “This is a good hitting team and I thought we were misfiring, so we took extra batting practice on Thursday. That helped us tremendously.”

The Spartans are on the road next week with a Wednesday evening game at No. 14 Stanford, then head to UT Arlington on Friday, April 12, for a WAC series against the Mavericks.
