10 Hits In Comeback Win Over Boise State

San Jose-The Spartans scattered 10 hits over six innings and pitcher Jennifer Ames threw a two-hitter as the San Jose State softball team won 5-3 over Boise State in a Western Athletic Conference game.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, the Spartans had at least one hit in the first five innings of the game, only being retired in order in the sixth.

In the two-run second inning, Annica Wolfe started the inning off with a solo home run to left field, her third home run of the season.  Cheryl Freitas drew a walk, advanced to second on an illegal pitch, third on a wild pitch and scored on an illegal pitch as Jessica Garcia drew a walk.

After falling behind 3-2 in the top of the fourth, the Spartans responded in the bottom of the inning with three runs on four hits.  With two on and two out, BranDee Garcia singled into left field to score Jessica Garcia from second.  Amanda Schatz then doubled to left field to score Sadie Coenen and BranDee Garcia to give San Jose State the lead for good.

"For a young team, what I was impressed with was not only coming back in the game but how they closed the last two innings," said Spartan head coach Peter Turner.  "They made some very difficult plays that could have gone south, did their job and closed the door."

BranDee Garcia finished the game with three hits, a run scored and an RBI.  Schatz and Wolfe each had two hits, while Sadie Coenen, Stephanie Ziemann and Jessica Garcia each had one.

Ames pitched her 10th complete game of the season as she improved her record to 6-9 on the season.  She allowed just the two hits in the game, a double to center field in the first and a bunt single in the sixth that went fair-foul-fair up the first base line, and settled down in the circle after walking two batters in the first inning and walked just two the rest of the game.

"Jen did not have a good beginning of the game with too many walks. I asked her what pitches she wanted to throw, and she settled down the rest of the game. Jen's velocity also went up the last two to three innings.

The Spartans are now 14-21 overall and 1-3 in WAC play. The two teams continue the series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon at SJSU Field.

"This is a huge win for us.  We can go into tomorrow knowing that we have a chance to win the series.  We want to win series at home.
