Softball Sweeps Utah State, Tops WAC Standings

San Jose—For the first time in school history, the San Jose State softball team opened Western Athletic Conference play with a three-game sweep as the Spartans won 8-0 in six innings and 4-1 over Utah State Saturday afternoon at SJSU Field.

San Jose State has never started WAC play with a series sweep since joining the conference in 1996-97.  The Spartans did start 3-0 in 2003 with Nevada, but that year, the teams played a four-game series.

Amanda Pridmore showed why she is one of the top pitchers in the conference as she recorded two more wins on the season to improve her record to 15-7.  She struck out seven batters on the day including five in the first game.  Pridmore faced 44 of the 45 Aggie batters in the two games.

In the first game, San Jose State scored at least one run in every inning except the fifth.  Cheryl Freitas drove in Markesha Collins in the first inning with a double to left field to start the Spartan scoring.  BranDee Garcia hit her third home run of the season in the second inning to open up the lead to 3-0.  Freitas drove in another run in the third inning with a single to center field to score Vanessa House.

The Spartans scored two runs in the fourth as Michelle Cox tripled to center field to score Collins and Devin Caldwell.  The game ended in the sixth inning as Garcia and Caldwell scored on a Cox double to left field.

In game two, San Jose State again jumped out to an early lead, scoring a run in the first inning as Jessie Hufstetler hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Collins from first base.  The team added to the lead with two runs in the fourth and one in the sixth for the win.

San Jose State sits atop the WAC standings with UTSA at 3-0.  The Roadrunners swept a three-game series at Texas State.  The Spartans return home this Tuesday, March 26, for a non-conference game against Sacramento State beginning at 1 p.m.
