San Jose—The San Jose State softball team extended its season-long winning streak to six games Friday afternoon as the Spartans won its Western Athletic Conference opener 2-1 over Utah State at SJSU Field.
The Spartans, who average 7.5 hits per game, were held to just four hits in the win and scored runs in the bottom of the second and third innings. The team’s first run came in the second inning, despite not getting a hit. Nicole Schultz, who started the inning with a walk, stole home as the Aggies threw down to second to get Devin Caldwell who was attempting to steal the base.
With one out in the third inning, Vanessa House got hit by a pitch to reach base, stole second and then scored on a Cheryl Freitas single to right field. The team stranded base runners in the fifth and sixth innings to end the game.
San Jose State had a chance to open the game up early, as a Michelle Cox bunt single and back-to-back walks to House and Freitas in the first inning loaded the bases with one out. However, Jessie Hufstetler struck out and Jessica Garcia flied out to left field to end the inning.
Senior pitcher Amanda Pridmore improved her record to 13-7 in the circle and struck out six in her 13th complete game of the year. She retired the first 10 batters of the game before allowing two singles in the fourth inning. Pridmore gave up a run in the top of the seventh inning before getting the final two Aggie batters to foul out and strike out to end the game.
San Jose State improves to 20-10 overall and 1-0 in the WAC, while Utah State falls to 5-23 overall and 0-1 in the conference. The two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon at SJSU Field.
