Pridmore's Record-Setting Day Gives Spartans Sweep

Santee, Calif. - Amanda Pridmore broke San Jose State's single-game strikeout record in a 4-0 shutout of Marist and struck out eight more in a 7-4 nine-inning win over Fairfield on day three of the San Diego Classic II, hosted by San Diego State, on Saturday, March 16.

Pridmore's 17 strikeouts against Marist was a single-game high among Western Athletic Conference (WAC) teams this season.

"I cannot give enough accolades to Pridmore," head coach Peter Turner said about his record-setting pitcher who struck out 25 batters in 12 innings of work. "It's fun to watch. As soon as we get tied or we get late in the game, she can clean it up and when she does, she shuts them down."

Spartans' Timely Hits Prove Successful

Against Marist, San Jose State (18-10) scored three of its four runs with two outs. The Spartans' first run came in the second. With two outs, back-to-back walks put runners on first and second. Markesha Collins, who is 14-for-21 in two-out situations, singled to center field driving in Annica Wolfe from second base.

A three-run third inning sealed the game for the Spartans. After a line out, Cheryl Freitas knocked a double and scored from third on a Jessie Hufstetler single. After a fly out and a walk by Devin Caldwell, Hufstetler scored when Wolfe singled to center field. In the next play, an attempt by Marist (6-5) shortstop Kyrsten Van Natta to tag Wolfe on a fielder's choice at second failed, giving Caldwell the time she needed to score the unearned run from third for the final 4-0 score.

Pridmore (10-7) allowed two hits in her third shutout of the season. Marist pitcher Janine Lalli (1-1) allowed nine hits and three walks. It was the first time this season that no Spartans struck out in the game.

"Our first six hitters are playing and hitting the ball well," Turner said. "Today was a testimony to how well the team is hitting the ball and how confident they are."

Down Early, Spartans Rebound For Sweep

Fairfield (8-8) took an 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third. But San Jose State brought the game within one, 3-2, in the top of the fourth. With two outs, Jessica Garcia singled to center field, moving Vanessa House, who led off the inning with a walk, to third. After Taylor Purdy walked, Nicole Schultz hit a long single to right field, scoring Jessica Garcia and House.

After a Stags' lead-off one-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to double up on San Jose State, 4-2, the Spartans knotted the score, 4-4, in the fifth. With one out, Michelle Cox bunted for a base hit and moved to third on House's double to left field, scored when Freitas grounded out to the Stags' third baseman. After a walk, Jessica Garcia's blasted a double to center field that allowed House to get the tying run.

The game remained tied at 4-4 until the ninth inning. The international tie-breaking rule placed Cox, who made the game's last out, on second to start the inning. House had a lead-off walk. But with two outs, Jessica Garcia hit a clean base hit to left field, driving in House and Cox. BranDee Garcia, pinch running for Jessica Garcia, scored an unearned run when Taylor Purdy reached on a fielding error by the Stags' shortstop, and topped off the Spartans' three-run inning for the final 7-4 count.

San Jose State's 11 hits in the Fairfield victory was the eighth time this season the Spartans had 10 or more hits in a game.

San Jose State starting pitcher Madison Fish struck out one, allowing five hits and walking three in four innings. Pridmore (11-7) relieved Fish, retiring all 15 batters she faced with eight strikeouts over five innings in the circle. Pridmore struck out two Stags in the fifth, sixth, seventh and ninth innings to cap the Spartans' seventh doubleheader sweep of the season.

"Tonight was a great comeback start for Maddy (Fish)," Turner said. "We need to eliminate her walks but if we do that, she will be fine. I was pleased with what she gave."

In San Jose State's final game of the San Diego Classic II, the Spartans face Long Beach State, who is 3-1 at the tournament, at 11:30 a.m. (PDT).
