Seventh Inning Walk-Off Gives Softball 2-1 Win

Santee, Calif. - A fielding error allowed Nicole Schultz to score the San Jose State University softball team's walk-off run in the seventh inning, giving the Spartans a 2-1 victory over Long Beach State in the final day of the San Diego Classic II, hosted by San Diego State, on Sunday, March 17.

The Spartans (19-10) finished the tournament with a 5-1 record, winning four-straight since a 2-0 loss to San Diego State to open the San Diego Classic II.

"Overall, I am pleased with our hitting game," said Head Coach Peter Turner. "There are some things we need to work on defensively but today was a roller coaster of a game."

Solid Defense Limits Long Beach State

Four-consecutive singles to open the fourth inning brought Long Beach State the game's first run. With the bases still loaded, Amanda Pridmore relieved starter Allison Lang and retired her first two batters with a strikeout and pop up.

"The team did a good job when they had to get out of a bases-loaded jam," Turner said. "They got out of it cheap, giving up one run, but that was the play of the game."

But the Spartans knotted the score in the fifth when BranDee Garcia bombed her second homerun of the season to left field.

Spartans Capitalize On Error To Win

In the seventh, a left field error by the 49ers gave San Jose State the walk-off victory. After a lead off pop up, Nicole Schultz singled to left field. Devin Caldwell singled to the same location and Schultz rounded the bases to score the winning run on an error by Long Beach State left fielder Brianna Stephan.

The Spartans scattered three hits, tying its season-low. Said Turner of the hit total, "We had a couple of line drives right to them."

Allison Lang spent the game's first three innings in the circle, retiring three batters and allowing one run on six hits. "Alli (Lang) did well," Turner said. "She had a bad inning, but she stayed calm."

Winning pitcher Pridmore (12-7) worked four innings in relief, allowing one hit and striking out four batters.

Jessica Garcia led the Spartans at the plate in San Diego, Calif., going 7-for-18 with three runs, one homer and eight RBI. She had 12 total bases and a .667 slugging percentage at the three-day tournament.

Pridmore was outstanding in the circle, posting a 0.54 ERA while striking out 44, walking six and allowing 11 hits over 27.2 innings. Said Turner, "I am pleased with (pitcher) Amanda Pridmore's play. She is ready for league."
