Freitas' 3 RBI Lead Softball To Victory

San Jose, Calif.-Cheryl Freitas contributed to all three Spartan runs in a 3-1 win in game one against New Mexico Wednesday afternoon at SJSU Field.  San Jose State lost the second game, 10-0 in six innings.

Freitas started the Spartan scoring in the bottom of the first inning.  With runners on second and third, she doubled down the left field line to score Britney Helm and Sadie Coenen.

Starting off the Spartan half of third inning, Freitas hit her fourth home run of the season to center field to give San Jose State a 3-1 lead.  The Spartans held that lead for the rest of the game for the victory.

"I was really excited to play them, and once I hit the home run, I was really proud," said Freitas.  "I really felt aggressive at the plate today. "

Spartan pitcher Jennifer Ames pitched her eight complete game of the season as she improved her record to 5-6 on the season.  She struck out five and allowed just one run and six hits as she faced 28 batters.

"Cheryl had quality at bats in the first game and was patient at the plate.  She did a great job and picked up the big hits when we really needed them.  I was proud of her and Jen for their effort in the first game," said Spartan head coach Peter Turner.

The second game was a complete opposite of the first.  San Jose State recorded just one hit, a single by Coenen through the left side, in the fourth inning.  The Spartans were unable to get any other runners on base as Coenen was the only San Jose State runner left on base the entire game.

San Jose State used three pitchers in the game.  Elyssa Fox pitched the first 1.2 innings, allowing two earned runs and struck out two as her record fell to 3-6.  Alex Molina pitched the next 2.2 innings and allowed six hits, two runs, one earned and struck out one.  Janessa Gutierrez pitched the final 1.2 innings, allowing four hits and six runs, all unearned, to close out the game.

"We did not pitch, hit or field well in the second game.  When you don't do those three things, you are not going to be successful," said Turner.

The Spartans are now 12-14 on the season and travel to the Judi Garman Tournament in Fullerton, Calif.  On Saturday, San Jose State faces #7 Arizona at 3:30 p.m., and Illinois at 7:30 p.m.  On Sunday, the Spartans play Pacific at 1:00 p.m., and Long Beach State at 3:30 p.m.
