Big Innings For Softball Lead To Day Two Sweep

Santee, Calif. - Big innings for the San Jose State University softball team led them to victory in the second day of the San Diego Classic II, hosted by San Diego State, with an 8-5 win over Massachusetts and a 9-2 victory against Harvard on Friday, March 15.

"We made various mistakes in both games that allowed the other team to lead," said Head Coach Peter Turner. "But the team remained calm and we played the second half of both games very disciplined."

Spartans Rebound Against Early Minutemen Lead

Against Massachusetts (2-12), the Spartans trailed, 5-0, in the bottom of the third. But a two-out scoring rally brought San Jose State (16-10) within one. Cheryl Freitas's sacrifice fly allowed Markesha Collins, who led off the inning with a walk, to score. After Jessie Hufstetler singled up the middle and drove in Michelle Cox from third, Jessica Garcia blasted a two-run homer to right center to make the score 5-4.

A second four-run inning gave the Spartans its first lead of the game. In the sixth, the Minutemen's starting pitcher Emma Mendoker loaded the bases on walks with no outs. Bridget Lemire, who replaced Mendoker after her third walk of the inning, walked in BranDee Garcia for the game-tying run. An infield fly and strike out left San Jose State with one out remaining. But Vanessa House knocked a two-run single through the left side to bring in Devin Caldwell and Taylor Purdy. Cheryl Freitas followed with a single up the middle, allowing BranDee Garcia to score for the final 8-5 score.

Allison Lang, Jordan Sauceda, Madison Fish and Amanda Pridmore combined for seven strikeouts and allowed eight hits. Pridmore (9-7), the winning pitcher, retired five batters. Said Turner, "Pridmore did a good job coming in and closing the door."

Multi-Base Hits Prove Successful

The Spartans came from behind in its second game of the day, against Harvard (4-7). Down 2-0, Markesha Collins and Jessica Garcia each bombed two-run doubles in the fifth to double up on the Crimson's lead.

With a lead-off single and bunt to open the seventh inning, Vanessa House's eighth multi-base hit of the year kicked off San Jose State's five-run showing. House slammed a triple down the right field line to drive in two runners. Jessica Garcia followed House with a one-run single to right field, bringing in House. Crimson pitcher Gabrielle Ruiz was replaced by Jamie Halula and, after a foul out, walk and single, Dorothy Morentin hit a ground ball to second base to plate Jessica Garcia. Devin Caldwell rounded out the five-run inning with an unearned run when BranDee Garcia reached on a fielding error by Harvard shortstop Emily Gusse.

Jordan Sauceda (3-0) earned the win for the Spartans, pitching one-hit 1.2 innings, during which she retired one batter. Along with Amanda Pridmore and Allison Lang, San Jose State's bullpen struck out five, allowing as many hits. Pridmore earned the save, her third of the year.

Spartans Strong At The Plate

On the day, San Jose State scattered 17 hits, 11 of which came against Harvard. "We have depth up and down the lineup that can move the ball," Turner said. "It's good to have a deep team because when one person doesn't fire, another one does. When the team is at bat, they do a good job of restructuring and making adjustments."

Jessica Garcia led the Spartans at the plate, going 3-for-5 on the day, recording five RBI and scoring two runs. "We expect big things out of her," Turner said of Garcia. "By moving her down the lineup, she has been getting better pitches."

In San Jose State's third day of the San Diego Classic II on Saturday, March 16, the team faces Marist at 2:00 p.m. and Fairfield at 7:00 p.m.
