Softball Drops First Game At San Diego Classic II

San Diego, Calif. - The San Jose State University softball team started its opening game of the San Diego Classic II against host San Diego State with two runners on and no outs, but failed to scored and were shut out, 2-0, on Thursday, March 14.

"I am not horribly disappointed with how we played because we had some good chances," Head Coach Peter Turner said. "We are not going to win every game, but we need to start beating some of the better teams."

In the opening inning, with Michelle Cox and Markesha Collins on first and second, respectively, Aztecs pitcher Rebecca Arbino induced three-consecutive ground ball force outs to end the Spartans' scoring threat.

San Jose State (14-10) was unable to capitalize with a runner in scoring position with less than two outs three times in the game.

San Diego State's (16-12) two runs came off of lead-off base hits in the second, a single by Leia Ruiz, and a double in the fourth by Kristin May. Ruiz scored off a sacrifice fly and the run in the fourth was scored on the third hit of the inning by Monica Downey.

Collins had her eighth multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-3. Vanessa House, Cheryl Freitas and Jessie Hufstetler each had a hit on three at bats.

San Jose State scattered five hits, including one double each by Collins and Freitas. The double by Freitas extended her hit streak to six games.

"We did not hit the ball well and we have to give that pitcher (Arbino) credit," Turner said.

Amanda Pridmore, the losing pitcher, (8-7) pitched a complete game, striking out seven and giving up as many hits. The winning pitcher, Rebecca Arbino (8-7), struck out five in the complete game shutout.

Turner talked about the impact of San Jose State's nine-day break. "I think having a few days off was good," he said, "but it would have been great if the first game back was against someone of this caliber under the lights."

Said Turner, "We will be right on track when league starts (March 22, against Utah State) so this is the last weekend to rehearse before the curtain goes up."

On San Jose State's second day of the San Diego Classic II, Saturday, March 15, the Spartans face Massachusetts at 2:00 p.m. and Harvard at 7:00 p.m.
