Hayward, Calif.-Wild pitches are not the pitcher's best friend. Unfortunately for the Spartan softball team, the wild pitch gave UC Davis the winning run Sunday afternoon as San Jose State lost to the Aggies, 4-3 in nine innings at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational.
Spartan pitcher Jennifer Ames totaled six wild pitches in the game, but the two that cost her game came in the ninth inning. Playing with tiebreaker rules, the Aggies started the ninth with a runner on second and got runners on the corners as the lead-off hitter got a bunt single. Ames then threw one of her wild pitches but combine with catcher Amanda Schatz to throw out the runner attempting to score. However, the runner from first advanced to third and scored on another Ames wild pitch.
Ames got the loss as she pitched 8.1 innings, allowing nine hits, four runs and a walk while striking out three.
San Jose State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning as Sadie Coenen doubled and BranDee Garcia singled to start off the inning. After an out, Alex Stange singled to right field to score Coenen, and Schatz singled up the middle to score Garcia.
UC Davis scored a run in the fourth inning to cut the led to 2-1, and tied the game at 2-2 in the seventh as relief pitcher and game winning pitcher Alex Holmes hit a home run to tie the game at 2-2.
With international tie-breaking rules in effect, the Spartans were able to score runner Britney Helm from second as she advanced on a Coenen single and scored on a Stange single.
San Jose State is now 11-13 on the season. The Spartans play at SJSU Field this Wednesday with a non-conference doubleheader against New Mexico at 12 p.m.
