Two Wins For Softball On Saturday

Hayward, Calif.-The Spartans used a sixth and seventh inning rally to win 3-2 over Albany, and then crushed Santa Clara 14-1 in five innings in two games Saturday at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational at the Alden Oliver Sports Complex in Hayward.

Against Albany, San Jose State scored first with a run in the top of the fourth.  With two outs, Alex Stange hit her first home run of the season, a shot to left center field.

The Great Danes then responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning off of two throwing errors by Spartan pitcher Elyssa Fox.

San Jose State then rallied in the sixth inning to tie the score at 1-1.  BranDee Garcia started the inning with a single to center field.  After the Spartans loaded the bases, Amanda Schatz singled to left field to score Cheryl Freitas from third base and tie the game at 1-1.

In the seventh with two outs, the Spartans rallied for the game-winning run.  Sadie Coenan doubled to left center, followed by a walk to Garcia.  Freitas then doubled to left field to score Coenen.

In the circle, Fox improved her record to 3-5 on the year.  She struck out a career-high nine batters and walked just one while allowing just three hits in seven innings.

The Spartans then changed fields and played host Santa Clara in the team's second game of the day.  The team got off to a quick start, scoring four runs in the first and seven runs in the second to jump out to an 11-0 lead after two innings.  The team added two runs in the third and one in the fourth for the 14-1 win.

Freshman pitcher Alex Molina pitched 3.2 innings to improve her record to 2-0 on the season.  She struck out five and allowed just three hits in the win.  Janessa Gutierrez pitched the final 1.1 innings, facing just five batters.

At the plate, Annica Wolfe led the team with three hits, four RBI and two runs scored. Cristina Menjivar went 2-for-4 from the plate and drove in two runs.  Freitas added two hits, three runs scored and three RBI.

"We got good pitching and timely hitting today," said Spartan head coach Peter Turner.  "We will take our two wins today, especially the come-from-behind win against Albany.  It is our first big 2-out hit we got this season.  We are getting better every game now.  Every game is a learning experience, and we are learning to do all the little things right so that we can be successful."

The Spartans finish their appearance at the Bronco Classic on Sunday with a game against UC Davis at 10 a.m.
