Hayward, Calif.-Despite taking a 2-1 lead in the second inning, the San Jose State softball team gave up five runs in the fifth to give UC Davis a 6-2 win Friday afternoon at the Santa Clara Bronco Classic at the Alden E. Oliver Sports Complex in Hayward.
After going down 1-0 in the top of the second, the Spartans responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning and took any means to get runners on base. Cheryl Freitas started the inning on what looked like a routine groundout but was awarded first base after the home plate umpire called the Aggies catcher for interference. With one out, Annica Wolfe then reached base as the UC Davis catcher was called for interference again.
The Spartans then took advantage of the two base runners. Jessica Garcia came to the plate and singled through the left side to load the bases. Stephanie Ziemann then singled through the right side to score Freitas to tie the game at 1-1. Jacqueline Zepeda then grounded out to first, scoring Wolfe and giving San Jose State the 2-1 lead.
Neither team scored for the next two innings before UC Davis put a five-spot on the scoreboard in the fifth inning.
Spartan pitcher Jennifer Ames suffered her fifth loss of the season as her record fell to 4-5. She struck out three but allowed 11 hits and faced 33 batters.
San Jose State now plays two games at the Bronco Classic on Saturday. The Spartans face Albany at 11 a.m. on Field 1, followed by Santa Clara at 1:15 p.m. on Field 2. On Sunday, the Spartans wrap-up tournament play with a single game against UC Davis at 10 a.m. on Field 1.
