Softball Keeps Winning and Setting Records

Stanford-Breanna Lopez and Alex Stange drove in six runs combined, Michelle Cox and Amanda Pridmore continued rewriting the Spartan record book and the San Jose State won its fourth consecutive game with an 8-4 win over Cal Poly Saturday night at the Stanford Louisville Slugger Classic.

Lopez hit her second home run of the season in the first inning to drive in two runs.  Her homer to left field drove in Cox who had reached base on a Mustang error.  With the home run, Lopez moved into a tie for 10th all-time in home runs at San Jose State with eight.  She needs just one to move into a tie for sixth and two for fourth place.

Stange hit her second home run of the season and fifth of her career in the bottom of the sixth inning.  With Cheryl Freitas and Annica Wolfe on base, Stange took the second pitch she saw over the left field fence to drive in three runs.  Stange also drove in Freitas in the fourth inning with a single to center to end the game with four RBI.

Cox officially owns the San Jose State hitting streak by herself after single to start the fifth inning extended her streak to 18 games, breaking the old record of 17.  In her freshman year, she added to her list of records tied or broken this season with three stolen bases in the game to join six other San Jose State players who did the same thing.  Cox already tied the run scored in a game record earlier this season with four.

A game after she set the San Jose State career saves record, Pridmore again pitched in relief, this time for Jennifer Ames, and picked up her third save in three chances.  Pridmore now has 10 saves for her Spartan career after pitching the final two innings of the game.

The Spartans scored three runs in the first, two in the fourth and three in the sixth for the win.  Freitas had another good game, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Markesha Collins was 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Ames pitched the first five innings of the game and allowed just five hits and four runs while striking out two for her third win of the season.

San Jose State plays two games at the Louisville Slugger Classic Sunday.  The team faces Colorado State at 11:15 a.m., and host Stanford at 3:45 p.m.
