Stanford-The Spartan softball team kept its winning ways going Saturday afternoon as San Jose State defeated James Madison, 9-1, at the Stanford Louisville Slugger Classic as two Spartans set school records during the game.
After tying the career saves record on Friday, Amanda Pridmore pitched the final two innings of the win Saturday to pick up her second save of the season and break the San Jose State career record. Pridmore now has nine career saves and owns the record by herself after tying former Spartan Carol Forbes just 24 hours earlier. In the game, Pridmore struck out three of the eight batters she faced.
On the hitting side, Michelle Cox tied the San Jose State softball hitting streak record as she has now hit in 17 consecutive games. She ties the record held by Pat Martinez who hit in 17 consecutive games during the 1995 season. Cox tied the record with a bunt single in the second inning and finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate. She leads the Spartans in hitting with a .416 average and 32 hits.
The Spartans struck early against the Dukes, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. James Madison responded with a run in the bottom of the inning. The two teams remained scoreless until the top of the seventh inning when San Jose State scored five runs.
Cheryl Freitas led the Spartan hitting attack as she went 3-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI. Breanna Lopez added two hits, both doubles, and drove in a run, while three others had a hit.
Allison Lang improved her record to 1-1 in the circle as she pitched the first five innings of the game. She allowed just three hits and one run and struck out two.
San Jose State continues play tonight with a game against Cal Poly at 8:15 p.m., at the Smith Family Stadium.
