Softball Commits Four Errors in 6-0 Loss

San Jose-San Jose State was held to six hits and no runs scored as the Spartan softball team lost a non-conference game to Pacific, 6-0, Tuesday afternoon at SJSU Field.

The Spartans committed four errors in the loss including two in the fifth inning that led to three unearned Tiger runs.

"Our errors could have been prevented by making the correct decisions," said Turner.  "Bad decision mistakes give good teams opportunities, and they took advantage of it. I believe that this team is good enough to bounce back from these mistakes.  I believe that this team learns from their mistakes and won't make them again."

The Spartans also had scoring opportunities in the game.  In the fifth inning, Vanessa House led off with a double to right field and advanced to third on an Alex Stange single double the right field line.  With Lauren Shanks pinch running for Stange at first, Britney Helm came to the plate and popped out to short stop.  But with the windy conditions, the uncertainty of the play led Shanks to take a lead off first but was caught off first by the Tigers.  In the meantime, House tried to score from third and was thrown out at home for the Pacific triple play.

San Jose State then came back in the bottom of the sixth inning to load the bases with two outs with a Dorothy Morentin walk, Markesha Collins single through the left side and Michelle Cox extended her hitting streak to 14 games with a bunt that died in front of home plate.  However, Jessica Garcia came to the plate and popped out to first to end the Spartan rally.

Four pitchers took to the circle Tuesday for San Jose State.  Starter Jennifer Ames pitched the first three innings as her record fell to 2-7.  She struck out two and allowed three hits and two runs.  Madison Fish pitched the next 2.1 innings and allowed four hits and four runs, one earned.  Allison Lang faced three batters in her third of an inning worked, while Jordan Sauceda made her Spartan debut pitching the final 1.1 innings.

San Jose State returns to action this Friday at the SCU Invitational at SJSU Field.  The Spartans play Saint Mary's at noon and UC Santa Barbara at 2:15 p.m.
