Las Vegas-The Spartan softball team needed extra innings on Sunday to decide the game against UNLV. Unfortunately, the Rebels scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning as San Jose State lost to UNLV 3-2 in the final game of the Eller Media Stadium Classic.
In a theme that is emerging this season, the Spartans took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Sadie Coenen started the game with a single up the middle and eventually scored on a Cheryl Freitas single up the middle.
Neither team scored again until the bottom of the sixth inning when UNLV scored on a Spartan throwing error. Neither scored in the seventh to send the game to the eighth inning.
Using international tie-breaking rules, Freitas started the inning on second. With two outs, Freitas scored on a UNLV fielding error that allowed Stephanie Ziemann to reach first base.
UNLV then responded in the bottom of the inning by scoring two runs to end the game.
Pitcher Elyssa Fox pitched a complete game and struck out six as her record fell to 2-5. She allowed eight hits and three runs, one earned, in her appearance in the circle.
San Jose State next plays at the Bronco Classic next weekend in Hayward. The Spartans face UC Davis at 4 p.m. on Friday, Albany and Santa Clara on Saturday and UC Davis on Sunday.
