Top Of Order Combines For 6 Runs in 9-5 Win

San Jose, Calif.-The top two Spartan hitters in the lineup each score three runs Sunday as the San Jose State softball team defeated Santa Clara, 9-5, in the final game of the Deanna Mauer Super Series at SJSU Field.  Southern Utah won the first game of the day, 8-2, over Santa Clara.

Lead-off hitter Markesha Collins and two-spot hitter Michelle Cox were each 2-for-3 at the plate and scored three runs each for San Jose State.  Collins and Cox started the game with back-to-back hits and did the same in the second inning.  They both also drew back-to-back walks in the fourth and ended up scoring in each situation.

"I cannot be disappointed with my output today," said Cox, who now has a 13-game hitting streak.  "I aim to put the ball in play every time and am pretty happy with my effort. I love hitting number two because it gives me lots of options, and I aim for a hit every game."

Freshman Madison Fish pitched in relief of starter Allison Lang who pitched the first two innings and allowed three hits and three runs and struck out one.  Fish pitched five innings and allowed three hits and two runs as she picked up her second win of the weekend.  She also struck out four in the win.

"I am really nervous every time I go out to the circle which also helps me keep a clear mind," said Fish. "Coach believing in me helps me a lot.  I try to just throw it and don't over think it.  Once I start overthinking my performance, I get shaky.  I am excited to be a part of the team and to be an option."

Jessica Garcia and Britney Helm each drove in two Spartan runs, and Helm went 2-for-3 at the plate.

"I thought our defense was great, but we didn't hit the ball great today," said Spartan head coach Peter Turner.  "Maddy's performances this weekend were a pleasant surprise and make me look like a genius. We needed someone to step up and we were not getting it done.  She grabbed the brass ring and I am really proud of her.

"I think we struggled at times this weekend, but to come out of it with a winning record, I am pleased about that."

San Jose State returns to action this Tuesday, March 6, for a non-conference game against Pacific at SJSU Field beginning at 2 p.m.
