Softball Drops Pair Of Games In Las Vegas

Las Vegas-On Friday, the Spartans found that the number "3" is a lucky number, just not for San Jose State. The softball team lost a pair of games by the exact same score of 3-1 to Bradley and Kansas at the Eller Media Stadium Classic.

The Spartans had to play comeback against Bradley as the Braves took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning.  In the bottom of the inning, Sadie Coenen led off with a San Jose State's first triple of the season, hers went to right field.  With two outs, Coenen scored on a Jacqueline Zepeda single through the right side.  Zepeda advanced to third on two wild pitches but did not score as Britney Helm grounded out to end the inning.

Jennifer Ames threw 4.2 innings pitched as she allowed seven hits and three walks and struck out two.  Janessa Gutierrez pitched 2.1 innings of relief, did not allow a hit in eight batters faced and struck out one.

Against Kansas, the Spartans took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning.  With one out, Alex Stange doubled to right field and scored two batters later on an Annica Wolfe double to right field.

The Jayhawks responded with three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-1 record.  The Spartans loaded the bases in the top of the fourth inning with a Stange single, Stephanie Ziemann walk and an Amanda Schatz single but left them loaded as Breanna Lopez popped out to third base to end the inning.

Spartan pitcher Elyssa Fox pitched a complete game as her record fell to 2-4.  She struck out five and walked just one batter and allowed just five hits and three runs.

"We had a case of the "at-thems" on Friday.  We hit a lot of ball right at the fielders in both games," said Spartan head coach Peter Turner.  "We had some bright spots including Sadie's triple that was going to be a home run but the wind blew it back into the park.  We just need to get more timely hitting, especially from our experienced players.  I have confidence in our team that we can put it all together this weekend."

Saturday, San Jose State faces San Diego at 3:45 p.m. and Troy at 8:15 p.m.  Then on Sunday, the Spartans close out the tournament with host UNLV at 2:30 p.m.
